After having been through a tragic, life-changing event, we are celebrating Holidays, birthdays and milestones on steroids. Is it too much?

We think not. Celebrating in over-the-top, campy ways is a distraction not only for Lou, but us too. When we first arrived home after rehab, Lou’s Birthday was soon to follow. Lou was not up for seeing family or friends at that point. We can count on two fingers, the people Lou wanted to see, while he was in recovery. It wasn’t because he didn’t miss everyone; it could’ve been embarrassment or not being the same person and not wanting others to see that; we may never know why. It’s his story to tell on another day. A day when he is ready.

While I’m not going to share every Holiday we’ve celebrated, I do want to share this past Christmas. Let’s set the scene; almost a year into a deadly pandemic, we haven’t traveled like we previously did; we are in a strange city, in a much different climate than we are accustomed. While NYC was getting hit with a snowstorm, we were in flip flops and shorts in Miami. The money we would’ve spent on gifts and travel for each other, we created an escape for us, with Miami flare.

Lou wanted TWENTY, we compromised on thirteen Christmas trees, over 1,400 ornaments, almost 3,000ft of string lights, snowglobes, lighted gifts under the tree……when all was said and done, Lou wants MORE next year! We’ve created a monster.
